Cut and paste *does* work, provided you have a suitable utility
installed, such as PowerSnap or MCP's built-in Snap. These feed the
characters into the input stream rather than pasting directly into the
gadget, so they work with all gadgets.

Either you aren't entering all the information, the other two fields
must also be completed, or you are mis-typing the serial number. The
fourth character is an upper case i, not a one. The circular characters
are both zeroes.
